FTP for Addon Domains and Subdomains

With cPanel, you can use FTP accounts for addon domains and subdomains in addition to your primary domain. This can be useful if you want to give someone direct access to upload and remove files for a particular addon domain or subdomain but still want to limit their access to other domains on your account. Additionally, using the addon domain and subdomain FTP accounts are a quick way to make sure you are uploading to the correct location.

To FTP into your account, you will need to have an FTP client that you are familiar with. If you are not familiar with FTP in general, please see our instructions on installing and using Filezilla, a free FTP client that HostMonster recommends using.

FTP Accounts for Addon Domains

  • To login with an FTP account you created, first create the FTP account in the HostMonster cPanel. For help on creating an FTP account, see "How to create an FTP Account".

  • Note: When assigning an addon, cPanel will NOT prompt you to create an FTP account. You will need to manually create the FTP account and set the directory for that FTP account to use the folder created for the addon domain (this will generally be the same name as the addon domain itself, so if you created example.com, the folder you need to attach to the FTP account will be /public_html/example).

To log in as the addon domain it will be:

    • Username: username@addondomain.com
    • Password: FTP account password
    • Host: addondomain.com
    • Folder or Directory: /

FTP Accounts for Subdomains

  • To login with an FTP account you create, first create the FTP account in the HostMonster cPanel. For help on creating an account, Click here.

  • Note: When assigning an subdomain, cPanel will NOT prompt you to create an FTP account. You will need to manually create the FTP account and set the directory for that FTP account to use the folder created for the subdomain (this will generally be the same name as the subdomain itself, so if you created blog.example.com, the folder you need to attach to the FTP account will be /public_html/blog).

To log in as the subdomain it will be:

    • Username: username@addon_domain.com
    • Password: FTP account password
    • Host: addondomain.com
    • Folder or Directory: /

FTP with the Primary Account

  • The primary FTP account can be used to access all the domains, files and folders on your account. Simply log into your FTP client and navigate to /public_html/addon_domains_folder/ and upload your files there.

To log in as the primary domain it will be:

    • Username: cPanel username - This can be found in the cPanel located in the left hand side column
    • Password: cPanel password - The password you use to login to your cPanel hosting account with HostMonster
    • Host: yourprimarydomain.com (replace this with your actual primary domain)
    • Folder or Directory: public_html/addon_domain_folder/ or public_html/subdomain_folder/
